By Fire Chief Steve Cole Jr.
February 2, 2025

On Sunday night at 2328 hours, Avondale Fire and EMS along with mutual aid companies were alerted for a house fire in the area of Baltimore Pike and Newark Road.

The 911 center was receiving multiple calls of a "house on fire.” Chief 23 arrived in the area within a minute of dispatch and determined the incident would be located on Main Street just East of Newark Road. Chief 23 found a garage on fire with extension into a storage container and vehicles, as well as multiple other structures exposed.

Chief 23 requested the working fire dispatch.
Engine 23 arrived as the first due engine laying a 5" supply line from the hydrant on Newark Road at the railroad tracks to the scene. Once on scene, crews deployed their hand line and began fire suppression. Ladder 22 arrived as the first due special service, setting up in the parking lot. Their crew assisted Engine 23's crew with an additional hand line. Squad 23 arrived as the second due engine securing Engine 23's hydrant and pulling a 3rd hand line from Engine 23. Tanker 19 arrived, and prepared to supply Engine 23 as a back up water supply. Engine 22-1 and Tower 24 arrived, setting up on Church Street to the rear of the incident for exposure control. Crews from Rescue and Ladder 25 stood by as the "RIT". As additional units arrived on scene, crews were assigned fire ground task. The incident was placed under control at 0015 hours, with command scaling the incident down. Engine 36 cleared the fire scene and relocated to Avondale to cover the area. Once the FM's were completed with their investigation, crews overhauled the area, and cleared the scene.

Final Avondale units cleared at 0234 hours.

Chief Cole held the "Main Street Command".
Kennett Fire Company's past Captain Melton assisted in the command post.
