At 1539 hours, the Avondale Fire Company was dispatched to the intersection of Penn Green Road and Cooper Road in New Garden Township for a reported haybale fire.
Engine and Squad 23 made the response shortly after dispatch and upon arrival of Squad 23, crews found a pile of straw well involved and spreading to the rest of the pile due to the heavy winds.
Deputy 23 arrived and held Cooper Road command while Chief 23 held operations. Squad 23 took the driveway off of Cooper Road while Engine 23 took another driveway off of Penn Green Road to be able to both attack and protect adjacent bales and structures.
Squad 23 laid in from Cooper Road and began the initial attack on the main burning pile to stop the fire spread from potentially reaching adjacent hay piles. Engine 23 laid in from the hydrant at Cooper and Penn Green Roads and then set up a blitz fire nozzle to create a water curtain to stop embers from going across Penn Green Road and endangering nearby hay piles and structures.
Due to the potential risk of embers causing more of a fire hazard, additional units were dispatched to the scene to assist, and additional tankers to supply Squad 23.
Crews from Kennett, Longwood, and West Grove stood by at the Laurel Valley Mushroom farm on Penn Green Road to ensure that none of the embers from the fire were spreading to any of the haybale piles at that location or any nearby residential and commercial properties.
Crews from West Grove Fire Company assisted by placing their engine on the hydrant to boost the pressure to Engine 23. Tanker 22 assisted by dumping their 3500 gallons of water into Squad 23's clapper valve while Brush 22 stood by in case of any potential brush fires started by flying embers.
Hockessin's tanker also assisted with providing additional water to Squad 23 as well as wrapping up the supply line from the Squad once water operations were held to Engine 23.
Loaders from the mushroom farm came to the scene to move away adjacent hay piles to prevent any further spread.
Fire police and Traffic 23 assisted with traffic control around the scene to stop traffic from coming directly into the scene.
Final crews cleared the scene at 1933 hours.
Crews would like to thank Guizzetti Mushrooms for providing food and refreshments for the crews operating on the scene as well as Christiana Fire Company for standing by at Station 23 while crews operated. |
